The technology changing lung cancer diagnosis & prognosis

Earlier Detection. Faster Answers. Better Outcomes.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the UK at around 21%* — largely because it’s usually found too late. But a new generation of diagnostic technology is helping shift the odds in patients’ favour — with better prognoses.

One example? The Ion Endoluminal System — a robotic-assisted platform that allows clinicians to reach, biopsy and diagnose even the smallest lung nodules with greater precision than ever before. It’s already in use at London Bridge Hospital, part of HCA UK.

Why catching lung cancer early Is critical

The earlier lung cancer is found, the more likely it is to be treated successfully. But because early-stage disease often causes no symptoms, it’s often discovered late — when survival rates are much lower.

The difference early detection makes:

  • <10mm nodule: ~92% five-year survival
  • >30mm nodule: ~68% five-year survival
  • Late-stage lung cancer: far lower rates

Even when nodules are found incidentally (on scans for other issues), clinicians often face a dilemma: wait and monitor, or investigate further using invasive techniques. That’s where Ion is reshaping the landscape.

What is the Ion Endoluminal System?

Ion is a robotic-assisted bronchoscopy platform developed by Intuitive (creators of the da Vinci robotic system). It enables highly accurate biopsies of small, hard-to-reach nodules inside the lungs — including those located deep in peripheral airways.

Key features include:

  • A shape-sensing catheter that moves 180° in all directions
  • Ability to access all 18 segments of the lung
  • Stable, precise targeting of tiny nodules (less than 1cm)
  • Reduced need for repeat scans or multiple invasive tests
  • “It’s like giving the surgeon superpowers — navigating inside the lung with millimetre precision,” said one thoracic specialist.

Why this matters for patients

Ion’s precision means faster answers. Instead of months of anxious “watch and wait,” patients may receive a definitive diagnosis quickly — and begin treatment sooner.

It’s not just about speed:

  • Higher accuracy in biopsy reduces the need for follow-ups
  • Less invasive than traditional surgical biopsy
  • Could pave the way for same-day diagnosis and surgery (using da Vinci-assisted resection)

London Bridge Hospital was Europe’s first provider to offer Ion in a live clinical setting outside research trials. The technology is already widely adopted in the US — with over 400 systems in place.

Is robotic diagnosis right for you?

While not all lung nodules require robotic assessment, Ion may be appropriate for:

  • Deep or small nodules difficult to access manually
  • Patients who want fast answers without invasive surgery
  • Cases where the clinical team is aiming for early curative intervention

How The MedicBook can help

We connect patients with the specialists and hospitals using cutting-edge technology — like Ion — to deliver earlier, safer diagnoses and faster treatment.

If you or your patient has an undiagnosed lung nodule or is undergoing investigation for a suspected thoracic malignancy, we can help:

  • Identify the right consultant
  • Arrange access to robotic-assisted diagnostics
  • Manage appointments, records and onward care

In the course of my career and in personal circumstances over the years I have been so privileged to work in health related industries.

“During covid — working at London Bridge Hospital — I was privileged to meet an almost pain-free patient who’d had a malignant lung tumour excised by surgeons, assisted by Intuitive's da Vinci robot. With the addition of the Ion Endoluminal System for pain-free biopsy London Bridge Hospital has a unique service for potential patients.” Samantha
